A lack of wind may not have been a pressing problem for most but for the fleet at Welwyn Garden City Sailing Club, it is something that has plagued their last two race weekends.

There was some breeze to be found in certain places and at certain times in the most recent outing, and it led to some unexpected results even if the usual suspects enjoyed the best of them.

David Lambert won overall with two very convincing wins, beating Angelo Hansen in both races.

But there was a three-way tie for third place between Robin Hailey, Tony Hale and Charles Adams.

The latter, commodore of the club, explained the reason.

He said: "The vagaries of sailing were well illustrated in race two when it paid to be finished a lap early.

"The Race Officer thought it would take far too long for the slower boats to go another lap.

"At that point the wind dropped completely so those still out on the water drifted to the finish with very poor average lap times and ended up behind Robin who did a lap fewer."

One week earlier it was Annette Walter who managed to find just enough wind out on Stanborough Lake to claim the victory in race, Alan Campbell following her in.

Race two saw the positions reversed so they shared the honours overall.

Francis Hansen was third at the end of the day after an excellent third place in race one, everyone else drifting in well after him.

Adams did much better in race two to end the day sharing fourth place overall with Hale.
