One of the most fascinating title battles for many of a year was finally settled on the final day of the season in a winner-takes-all battle - with Welwyn Garden City the ones standing tall at the end of it.
The ladies' second team at the Hertfordshire Sports Village-based hockey club had been locked with the rivals from Stevenage for the majority of the East League Division Four South West campaign.
The pair had gone unbeaten until the penultimate weekend, Stevenage having the edge by two points, winning one more than WGC.
But the advantage swung to Welwyn with one game to go, Stevenage losing 2-1 to Blueharts to drop to second, one point behind.
As fate would have it, a postponement meant the pair met at the Nobel School in Stevenage on Saturday.
And goals from skipper Dan Irwin and Hannah Morgan gave Welwyn a 2-1 victory and the championship.
They had dominated the first half too and turned round 1-0 in front but Stevenage fought back after the break to level.
Welwyn had seen a penalty stroke saved in the second period too but more pressure brought a winner and started the celebrations.
Their final record stood at 16 wins and four draws from their 20 games, with 57 goals scored and just 14 conceded.
