Welwyn Garden City Cricket Club may be still finalising their on-field plans for the new season but they have just completed an 18-month project off it.

With the assistance of a grant from the ECB, the £35k project to redevelop the club's nets was successfully completed last week.

The work, carried out by Club Turf, a company started by ex-England cricketer Derek Underwood, did not go smoothly at all times.

Having to endure a winter of harsh frosts and flooding at times, the project lost many weeks lost to bad weather, and there was also the undulating outfield to deal with.

In order to comply with the ECB net regulations, the playing surface and bowling run up had to be within a certain degree of tolerance parameters, and this meant an extra 100 tonnes of topsoil having to be redistributed to make the surface area level.

However, with the levelled area now seeded, the nets will be ready for use when the new season commences in a few weeks.

A spokesman for the club said: "With an ever-growing junior section of nearly 200 children, we needed to address the poor state of their previous nets.

"Club Turf have done a fine job in completely removing all trace of what was once there, and using the exact same footprint, erected some bespoke nets that will ensure that we remain one of the pre-eminent clubs in the county for many years to come.

"We are continuing to welcome all players, whether junior or senior, and invite everyone of all playing ability to come down to Digswell Park."
