Youngsters from Herts Phoenix Athletics Club picked up plenty of experience, and some good results, as they competed at the National Indoor Championships.

Hels in Sheffield, the event was open to athletes at U15, U17 and U20 levels and attracted the usual high-standard field.

Matthew Cox jumped a season's best in the U20m triple jump, going to 13.26m, as did Ena Olivier in the U20 women's high jump.

She cleared 1.55m.

On the track, Amelia Gittens finished first in her heat of the U20 60m with a PB of 7.69 and then lowered it by 0.01 as she came second in the semi-final.

She couldn't do it in the final, coming eighth, but this was still a great achievement in her first year in the age category.

The best result for the Welwyn Garden City-based athletes came from Tiana Rizzo.

She finished first in her heat of the U17 60m with a PB of 7.68 and then lopped a whopping 0.05 off that to come second in the semi-final.

And then, just to prove it wasn’t a flash in the pan, she went and ran the same time, agonisingly just missing out on the podium places by coming fourth.
