Potters Bar got their second win of the East Hockey League season - coming out on top in a nine-goal thriller away to Bedford.

The game was between two sides who have not had the best of starts to the Division One South campaign but it certainly lit up a gloomy November afternoon.

Bar got off to a great start even after losing James Brooking to injury, with his replacement, Jay Burn powering home after good work from Mark Turpin and Miles Tomkins.

The early fireworks continued when Ed Seaman broke down the right and drove into the D.

His ball across goal was tipped back out to the penalty spot for Burn to slam in his second.

Bedford clawed a goal back with a straight ball through the Bar defence but the away side would grab a further two goals

A deflection from Turpin made it three, Seaman getting the assist, and then the skipper was brought down for a penalty flick, converted by Ed Whybrow.

Cards then took centre stage and it allowed Bedford to score twice and put Potters Bar on the back foot.

However, Seaman went on charge immediately after the third home goal, beating two defenders and winning a short corner.

Turpin finished emphatically to restor the two-goal cushion, meaning the fourth Bedford goal was nothing more than a consolation.

Welwyn Garden City though fell to a 3-1 loss at Bishop's Stortford in Division Two South West.

They did have Mark Skilbeck back from injury as well as handing a debut to Ben Clay but they failed to turn good possession into chances for their talented forwards.

Stortford’s first goal came from a well-worked free-hit struck to the penalty spot and deflected towards their attacker on the right post for a simple tap in.

A penalty corner was converted for 2-0 before half-time but WGC started brightly after the interval, Nate Last forcing a good save from the home keeper after being set-up by Skilbeck.

And they got the goal the improved performance deserved, a string of well-worked passes converted by Last.

But card trouble halted their charge and it was during a spell when they were down to 10 players that Stortford sealed the victory, a shot deflected into the top corner off Pete Mullins' stick.

They did have a couple of chances to narrow the gap again but it wouldn't fall for them.
