Elizabeth Mallett went home to the Midlands £1,500 richer after claiming the first prize at Welwyn Garden City Golf Club’s second annual Ladies Pro-Am sponsored by PACAIR.
The 24-year-old from Sutton Coldfield carded a fine one-over-par 71 to beat Dulcie Sverdloff from Essex by one shot.
But she was not the biggest winner on the day because an auction, a raffle and the club’s unique patio challenge raised well over £4,000 for the captain and lady captain’s charities, The Valley School in Stevenage and Cancer Research UK.
This year’s pro-am attracted 19 women professionals from all over England and Wales and they produced some sparkling golf in difficult conditions.
Sverdloff, a former Essex county player, pocketed £1,000 for her second-place finish while Sian James claimed third place over former Welsh amateur international Chloe Williams on countback, after both players finished on 74.
“It was great to see so many professionals support the event and even better to receive so much positive feedback from them,” said Welwyn Garden City captain, John Malone.
“When we started the pro-am last year we hoped it would develop into one of Britain’s biggest pro-ams for women professionals and we’re well on the way to achieving that aim.
“It has also been great fun for our sponsors, members and guests and to raise over £4,000 for our respective captains’ charities is the icing on the cake.”
He added: “Lady captain Julie Lovell and I couldn’t be more delighted that such a significant sum is going to two such worthy causes.”
The top prize in the team event was won by the group led by professional Suzanne Dickens, the inaugural winner of the individual prize last year, and featuring Nic Roberts, Phil Lane and Mark Hutchinson, representing S&G Air Conditioning Contracts Ltd.
They accumulated 82 stableford points to win by one point from the team comprising professional Charlotte Austwick, WGC chairman Roy Warman, Colin Callander and Ian Harpur.
The second-placed team beat professional Sian James, Trevor Canavan, Ian Worsley and Keith Travers on a card countback.
