POTTERS Bar Squash Club is throwing its weight behind a ‘Back The Bid’ campaign to get squash in as an Olympic sport.

The club, as well as showing its support for the move, is also rapidly developing its own structure, now running as Team PB, and has enlisted the support of a number of local businesses to help with sponsorship.

Backed by Business Team PB, professional and top junior prospects, who boast many national titles and caps for their country, will represent Bar in support of Back the Bid 2020, continuing the GB Olympic Sporting Legacy with an ultimate aspiration to play in the Olympic Games.

Each week, Team PB, made up of five players, will play in the Hertfordshire County League and Cup competitions over the 2012/13 season in a total of about 25 matches based at DHC Health Club in Mount Grace Road.

The World Squash Federation (WSF) launched Back the Bid 2020 to tap into the huge support players, fans and corporate organisations are showing towards Squash’s campaign to get the sport into the Olympic Games.

Back the Bid 2020’s key objective is to support development initiatives to attract more young people into the sport of squash, who could aspire to compete in the Games. “With individuals and companies expressing an interest in playing a part in supporting our Olympic campaign, we felt now was the right time to provide an opportunity for them to do so through Back the Bid 2020,” said WSF President N Ramachandran.

“I have been struck during the years of my presidency what an enormous reservoir of goodwill there is for our sport, especially from our huge playing community across the world. Inclusion in the Olympic Games is a huge opportunity for Squash, especially for youngsters who will come into the sport – and the feedback we have had from fans world-wide since launching our 2020 Olympic campaign in July has been phenomenal.”

And these words have been confirmed by the fantastic support Team PB Squash has received from some Potters Bar businesses who have joined Business Team PB to support the Olympic Legacy.

The main gold sponsor is Potters Bar Eye Care Centre who are firm supporters of the 2020 (or should that be 20/20) bid for squash. Proprietor Julie Gazey said: “It is so important to continue the great national feeling of the London Olympic Games; Team PB continues that legacy and gives support to the wonderful sport of squash which is a Commonwealth Games sport and will hopefully be an Olympic sport in the future.”

A couple of Team PB’s players who wear lenses are also consulting with Potters Bar Eye Care Centre on the revolutionary Dream Vision Ortho Lenses, which correct your vision overnight.

The centre is on 46 Broadway, Darkes Lane, Potters Bar, telephone number is 01707 658708. They are also having a Tiffany 2020 Vision Day with Free Tiffany items prize draw, 100 off Tiffany frames, champagne and nibbles. Visit the shop on November 6 to enter the draw.

The Silver Sponsors for the 2012/13 season are Regency Chinese Restaurant and Clean Image Dry Cleaners with the bronze sponsors being Potters Bar Healthfoods, Potters Heel Bar and Statons Estate Agents.
