WELWYN Garden City Ladies picked up a useful point in a highly-competitive 1-1 draw against mid-table Cambridge Nomads in the East Women's League Division 2 South West.

Hosts Welwyn started very positively, dominating the midfield and with all players except their goalkeeper encamped in their attacking half for the first 15 minutes.

Despite the pressure and possession, they barely managed to encroach in the Cambridge D and trouble the keeper.

Cambridge then settled down and managed some fast breaks, but Sally Warrington and Lisa Sheffield managed to contain the skilful and speedy left and centre forwards.

It was on the counter attack that Welwyn got the breakthrough 20 minutes into the game.

Captain Gemma Hale found Jane Kinghorn in the centre. She threaded the ball through to Anna Geaves in space behind the Cambridge defence.

She collected perfectly and calmly smashed the ball past the visiting goalie to make it 1-0 to the home side.

Nomads responded well and got the equaliser within five minutes with a goal from a free hit just outside the Welwyn D to make the scores level by half-time.

For much of the second period, the midfield players from both teams cancelled each other out and the well organised defences easily snuffed out any attacks that got through.

It was not until the final five minutes that Nomads earned their first penalty corner, but the Welwyn defenders prevented a clear shot.

A fast counter-attack by Welwyn, involving Jane Kinghorn and Loz Allen, forced Nomads into a foul in the D.

And from the resulting penalty corner, Janet Warrington's well struck shot beat the keeper but was saved by a defender on the near post.

A 1-1 draw was a fair result from a hard-fought match at the Herts Sports Village.

Grace Mizon had an excellent game in her new role as the holding midfielder.

However, Clare Burgess was the player-of-the-match for her endless work and attacking play at right half.
