The former One Directioner retweeted to encourage people to donate to a 23-year-old Potters Bar man with cancer.

Zayn Malik, who has 18.8 million Twitter followers, shared a tweet about Pete Douthwaite, 23, of Aberdale Gardens, who has a rare form of cancer.

The tweet was originally tweeted by Zayn Malik fan ‘ZoloZaynZquaad’ before being retweeted by the singer himself.

Pete was diagnosed with a cervical chordoma in early 2015, which is a tumour which wraps around the spinal chord.

His family and friends have set up a JustGiving page to raise money for specialist treatment in America, and so far have raised £23,440 towards their £50,000 target.

They have also set up a Facebook group, ‘Raising Money for Pete Douthwaite’ which has over 10,000 members, and are promoting the cause using the hashtag #ForPetersSake
