THE House of Commons was invaded by youngsters from Times Territory, who even gave our own MP a grilling.

Welwyn Hatfield's youth council, made up of students from Monk's Walk, Stanborough and Sir Frederic Osborn schools in WGC, and Bishop's Hatfield Girls' School, descended on Parliament on Tuesday last week.

They were given a tour and had lunch with Welwyn Hatfield MP Grant Shapps, before being given the opportunity to put their own questions to him.

Mr Shapps also gave a talk on the role of MP and the powers of government.

Youth councillor Dan Stirling, from Stanborough School, said: "The trip was very enjoyable and informative.

"The meeting with Grant Shapps answered my questions and assured me that Welwyn Hatfield was in safe hands."

The trip was organised by two borough councillors - youth champion Irene Dean and Paul Smith, who is mentoring the team and is currently acting chairman of the youth council.

He said: "This visit was an excellent opportunity for the youth council to get a feel for the bigger political picture - they should feel proud of what they are doing at a local level and that it does have an impact.
