A young Times Territory woman has returned from Romania, where she taught at a school thanks to the Guide movement.

Eleanor Rousell, 18, of Woolmer Green joined a group of Guides helping at a summer school in Godinesti in the south-west of Romania.

She taught English, and ran sessions in sports, art and crafts.

Eleanor, who is studying to be a Guide leader, said: “Having the opportunity to let the kids just be kids was very rewarding and made me appreciate how fortunate we are to be able to go to school and have an education.

“The kids in Godinesti are expected to work or look after their younger siblings.

“You could see how much the kids appreciated the week and how the summer school helped them grow, develop and aspire to greater things.”

She was also able to visit the Black Sea coast and the capital, Bucharest. as part of Girlguiding Anglia’s International Opportunities programme.
