Fast acting motorists helped rescue a woman from her car before it caught alight on the A1(M) this morning.

Police reported that a Red Vauxhall Corsa had left the carriageway and collided with a tree.

Passing motorists had stopped to help the woman driver out of her car, which subsequently caught alight.

The vehicle was recovered and the carriageway was fully reopened just before 8.30am.

Fire crews from Baldock and Royston arrived to put out the car fire between Junctions 9 Letchworth and 8 Hitchin, Stevenage at about 7.30am, and extinguished the blaze using hose reel jets and breathing apparatus.

The woman in her 20s was conscious when the ambulance crew arrived and was taken to Lister Hospital.
