Two women had their purses stolen within an hour while shopping at The Howard Centre in Welwyn Garden City.

The first theft happened between 2pm and 2.15pm on Tuesday, February 2, when a woman in her 80s was in Boots and noticed her purse had been taken from her bag.

Around an hour later, another woman had her purse stolen while in Card Factory, a police spokeswoman said.

An OWL message was the sent out to residents, saying: “If you are travelling around Welwyn Garden and the shops please remain vigilant and ensure your purse is secured in your bags.

“Most of our PCSOs carry purse chains, if you see one of us and require a chain please feel free to stop and ask us and we will happily fit your purse chain for you.”

The police spokeswoman urged people to follow its crime prevention advice on https://www.herts.police.uk/Information-and-services/ and asked anyone who sees anything suspicious to contact officers via non-emergency number 101.
