A man was arrested after a woman was allegedly raped at a Welwyn Garden City homeless shelter.

A police spokeswoman told the WHT: “Officers from the specialist Sexual Offences Investigation Team are investigating a report of a rape which is alleged to have occurred at the YMCA in Peartree Lane, Welwyn Garden City, on Thursday, November 23, in the early hours of the morning.

“A 31-year-old man from Welwyn Garden City was arrested on suspicion of rape shortly afterwards and has been released under investigation.”

She added that the victim is being supported by officers from the unit whilst investigations are ongoing.

Anyone who has any information which could assist the investigation is asked to contact Hertfordshire Constabulary on the non-emergency number 101 quoting crime reference B1/17/4776.

“We will cooperate and assist the police with their ongoing enquiries, but do not intend to make further comment whilst the investigations continue,” he added.
