A POPULAR national pub chain is on its way to Hatfield.

JD Wetherspoon has confirmed it has bought premises at the newly-constructed Comet Square site off Comet Way.

It is hoped a bar will be up and running by the end of the year.

As yet the chain has not released details of the size or design of the pub.

There are already plenty of Wetherspoons pubs across Hertfordshire, including Potters Bar, St Albans, Stevenage, and Watford.

The project will cost around £1.2m and Eddie Gershon, a spokesman for the company, expects many jobs to be created.

He said: "We will be building the new pub in Hatfield towards the end of 2008 or early 2009. Once it is open it should create around 40 new jobs for the area.

"It is a town we are very interested in and we are glad to be opening a pub there."

JD Wetherspoon is the latest franchise to choose to move to the new Comet Square shopping centre, which is behind the recently opened Travel Lodge.

An Aldi supermarket is due to open next to the pub in mid-April.

Food chains including Subway and Domino's Pizza are set to open in the parade of shops next door, which has already been built.

The entire complex will be a district centre for the estate.
