J D Wetherspoon held a public consultation last week over its controversial proposal to open a pub in Welwyn Garden City.

Over 300 residents flocked to Gosling Sports Park last Friday to voice their opinions on the pub chain’s plan to convert a Parkway house into a pub.

A Wetherspoons spokesman said: “There were a number of local residents who showed support for the scheme, citing that they thought the proposals were very exciting and the pub would create a number of job opportunities for local residents.”

However, Shaun O’Reilly of the Welwyn Garden City Society described the consultation as “a PR attempt to support a very poor planning application”.

The public responses will now be reviewed by Wetherspoons before it submits an overview to the council in the coming weeks.
