A TALENTED rifle shooter and publican is desperate to acquire some sponsorship after he was accepted into a national academy.

Piers Lyon, owner of The White Hart Hotel in Welwyn, took one step closer to his dream of representing his country at target shooting, but needs funding for new equipment.

The 30-year-old is appealing to local businesses for a "helping hand" in his quest to get to the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014.

He said: "It may be a small glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel but at least I'm in the tunnel now.

"Because the funding is almost non-existent I really need some help with buying new equipment such as clothes and stands to better myself at the sport."

Money would also go towards essential flights and accommodation that need to be paid for if he is going to compete internationally.

He joins around 15 other experts in the England National Squad Academy and hopes that backing can help him continue to improve.

"I have been shooting for 15 years and in the last two I have become county champion," he said.

"I hope there is someone out there to help be keep on going."

To sponsor Piers contact him at The White Hart on 01438 715353.
