WELWYN Garden City schoolboy Archie Denton is smiling after double medal success in the Herts Schools Judo Association tournament.

The eight-year-old, who attends Sherrardswood School, won a gold medal in the eight to nine-year-olds category up to 42 kilos at the event that took place at Berkhamsted Sports Centre.

He also competed in the same age category up to 50 kilos, which is way above his weight, and won the bronze.

Delighted father Barry Denton said: "It was a brilliant achievement and a superb day all round.

"I am very proud of him to have achieved what he has in such a short space of time."

Archie, who lives in Potters Bar, is also a keen kick-boxer and rugby player, and his father has already described him as being 'very strong'.

The youngster has only been practising judo for six months and it was the first competition he has entered into.

But Archie was not the only one who was getting into the action, with proud parent Barry admitting to getting carried away himself watching on!

Archie trains at the V & E Judo Club in Cheshunt and if he continues to learn at the rate he has been, he will develop into a skilled combatant.
