Archant

The Welwyn Hatfield Times has been crowned the region’s top weekly paid-for newspaper.

The paper picked up the title at the EDF Energy East of England Media Awards.

Judges praised the paper’s mixture of news, sport and entertainment.

The gong was handed out at Norwich City’s Carrow Road stadium on Thursday.

News editor Dave Burke, who attended the ceremony along with chief reporter Paul Christian and senior reporter Alex Lewis, said he was delighted.

Dave said: “It was great to have the hard work of the team rewarded.

“It demonstrates what I have been saying for a long time – we are very good at what we do, and we serve our readers well.

“We were in a very strong field, shortlisted alongside the Essex Chronicle and the Harwich and Manningtree Standard.

“They are both fantastic papers, so it is a huge honour to have won.”

And Dave continued: “We’re not going to be complacent – we have a great team here who fully deserve their moment of glory, but there is plenty more to do.

“Each week we put out a paper that we are rightly proud of, and will continue to do so.”
