AFTER initial fears that Welwyn Hatfield would be wiped off the political map MP Grant Shapps is celebrating keeping and expanding his constituency.

The Boundary Commission for England today (Tuesday) unveiled its constituency cull report, which aims to cut the number of MPs from 650 to 600.

Welwyn Hatfield will also now absorb Hertford Rural North and Hertford Rural South wards at the expense of Hertford and Stortford MP Mark Prisk.

The constituency now also encompasses Watton-at-Stone.

One solution mooted during the consultation phase was to split Welwyn Hatfield, with Hatfield merging with St Albans, but fears that that might happen have now been laid to rest.
