On Sunday, November 11, thousands gathered all over to pay their respects to servicemen and women who made the ultimate sacrifice during two world wars and other conflicts.

Remembrance Day also honours those who fought and lived, and those who serve now.

The de Havilland Philharmonic performed a concert in Flanders Fields featuring music composed around the time of the Great War. The concert ended with Vaughan Williams Pastoral Symphony, dramatically interpreted in live paintings by James Mayhew and interwoven with classic war poetry. This was followed by the showing of A County at War, Life on the Home Front in Hertfordshire (Armistice Centenary Edition) written and directed by DL Howard Guard MBE DL and commissioned by HM Lieutenancy of Hertfordshire. Dr Guard was in the audience. Deputy Lieutenant Dr Guard then pressed the button to light the de Havilland Beacon. Originally sited in Hatfield in 1934 the beacon helped pilots navigate their way back to the Hatfield Aerodrome safely during the second World War. After falling into disrepair this was restored and returned to the de Havilland site in 2013. Picture: Pete Stevens. - Credit: Archant
