The borough's MP is set for fresh talks about extending the Oyster system to Welwyn Hatfield.

Residents had rejoiced after former Rail Minister Claire Perry confirmed plans to extend the service by 2018, but last November her successor Paul Maynard plunged the proposals into doubt after providing a non-committal update.

A spokesman for Welwyn Hatfield MP Grant Shapps said “there is concern that this commitment might not now be met”, sparking the MP to arrange a meeting with the new Rail Minister Jo Johnson – who was appointed in January.

Mr Shapps said: “I’m keen to meet the Rail Minister in order to seek an urgent clarification on what the plans are for the Oyster system and Welwyn Hatfield, and to make sure this commitment is honoured.

“Extending it would provide a real boost both for residents and local businesses.”

The meeting will take place on May 1, Mr Shapps’ spokesman said.
