Mr Shapps joined chair David Dimbleby and fellow panellists Labour’s Yvette Cooper, Daily Mail sketch writer Quentin Letts, the Huffington Post’s Mehdi Hasan and Lib Dem Kirsty Williams last night (Thursday).

The audience in Birmingham quizzed the panel on the key issues of the day, including housing, press regulation, the European Union and the row between the Daily Mail and Ed Miliband.

In a heated clash with Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper over cuts to young people’s benefits, Mr Shapps insisted 18 to 25 year olds would not be left on the employment “scrapheap”.
