Welwyn Hatfield’s purse strings will soon be in new hands, as the councillor who holds them is about to step down.

Deputy borough council leader Alan Franey, who doubles up as resources portfolio holder, has decided not to stand for re-election in May for undisclosed “personal reasons”.

Councillor Franey, who represents Sherrards in Welwyn Garden City, told the Welwyn Hatfield Times: “I have enjoyed my 12 years, many of which have been on the cabinet and as deputy leader. I will miss my involvement, however life moves on and so does my age.”
