Liberal Democrat candidate Paul Zukowskjy received 8,010 votes from residents in Welwyn Hatfield.
Speaking to the WHT after the vote was announced he said he was certainly sticking around for the next election.
He said: “I live here, I work here, I’ll be sticking around.
“When I was selected I was pretty sure I wasn’t going to win.
“This was always a long term plan.”
