LIBERAL Democrat parliamentary candidate Paul Zukowskyj said he was 'stunned' by Mr. Shapps' attack on the Government. "It's clearly trying to deflect blame from the council. If Grant really said that I'm stunned. They're the people who negotiated the contract, they're the one's to blame.

"The public can now see through the mess the council have made. Time to vote them out. That's the only way Hatfield can put the past behind and begin the healing process."

He also admitted that the town centre plans, as they stand, looked doomed.

"I can't see how (developers) St Modwen are going to find £10m. It looks like we might be going back to the drawing board and starting again."

But he added: "I think there's still a way forward from that.
