PLANS to create extra pitches for Gypsies and Travellers in Welwyn Hatfield have been rubber stamped by the Government.

The announcement, by Communities Secretary John Denham, follows 18 months of consultation over the number of pitches needed in the east of England by 2011.

Welwyn Hatfield will have to provide space for an extra 17 caravans over the next two years.

This is in addition to the 51 pitches already located at three different sites across the borough.

A site for the new pitches has yet to be chosen, although land in Bulls Lane south, Bell Bar, has been earmarked as a possible location.
