A Welwyn Hatfield councillor has been charged in connection with historic allegations of sexual assault on a girl under 14 years old.

Howlands councillor Stanley Tunstall, 70, of Chilton Green, Welwyn Garden City, has been charged with three counts of indecent assault relating to offences in the 1960s, and will appear at Hendon Magistrates’ Court on Friday, April 15.

A Conservative spokesman confirmed he had been suspended from Welwyn Hatfield Conservative Group and the party, but when asked if it was because of the charge, he added “I do not think it’s appropriate to comment in more detail at the moment”.

Cllr Tunstall told the WHT he would “absolutely not” be pleading guilty, and added: “I’m completely innocent of a crime that is alleged to have happened 52 years ago. I shall continue to carry out my duties as an independent councillor.”
