COUNCIL workers across Times Territory are to be given the chance to improve their literacy and numeracy skills.

Welwyn Hatfield Council has signed up to the Government's Skills pledge, an initiative which helps employees gain important skills and qualifications.

The authority believes this initiative will help to improve both the productivity and efficiency of its workforce.

It also thinks the programme will bolster the confidence of its staff and give them access to better career opportunities.

Chief executive Michel Saminaden said: "I am delighted to have signed this pledge on behalf of the council.

"We are committed to improvement and dedicated to enhancing the already wide-ranging skills of our employees.

"The council will offer appropriate support required for the relevant training to be completed.
