Welwyn Hatfield Council’s finances praised

A REPORT by the Audit Commission has praised Welwyn Hatfield Council’s financial management in the face of Government spending cuts and tighter budgets.

The council’s annual governance report for 2010/11 has been presented to the borough’s audit committee, and compliments finance chiefs on an “excellent” set of accounts.

In his report, the district auditor told the council: “I have not identified any significant weakness in the design or operation of an internal control that might result in a material error in your financial statements of which you are not aware.

“The quality of the financial statements produced by the council was of a very high standard. The financial statements were also supported by a full set of excellent working papers, which enabled the audit process to run smoothly with minimal additional support from the finance team.”

Cllr George Michaelides said: “We are still facing big economic challenges for the current financial year, but this provides confirmation we are on the right track. We have fantastic employees dedicated to helping maintain the high standard of our services, while we continue to manage the budget responsibly.”
