The Welwyn Hatfield Conservatives have revealed its candidate for a by election following the death of councillor Mandy Perkins.

The candidate has been put forward for the Welwyn Hatfield Council by election for Welwyn West, due to take place on Thursday, November 29.

Paul Smith, a finance director who has lived in Welwyn Village for nine years, said he is keen to continue Mandy’s legacy of “hard work” for the Conservatives by “maintaining and improving” the area.

He added: “We have to ensure that her positive actions endure in Welwyn and that is the cornerstone of my campaign.

Paul said he is actively involved in two Welwyn-based groups, and has helped in a number of one-off local projects such as the daffodil bulb planting and the ‘Clean for the Queen’ project in 2016.

He said: “In this digital age it’s really important to maintain and develop the vibrancy of the village centre, through supporting local businesses.

“Talk is cheap and our local businesses will only succeed and prosper if we vote with our feet.”
