A collection of heartwarming, happy childhood memories written and drawn by pupils from a primary school near Welwyn is being sold on Amazon to raise money for a charity created by a local couple.

Children from Oaklands Primary School in Oaklands, created drawings, paintings, and sketches of their favourite childhood memories to be featured within the Little Book of Happy Memories.

A ceremony, presented by leading children’s author, Clare Luther, was held at the school on Friday to award the winners who had their drawings published in the book.

The book, which is raising money for the charity The National Maternity Support Foundation (NMSF), is being sold for £9.99 on Amazon.

Rachel and Andrew Canter, of Welwyn Garden City, created the charity after their son Jake’s stillbirth.

Last autumn the charity launched National Caring Week which ran from Saturday, October 29, to Friday, November 4, to coincide with National Maternity Day and the anniversary of Jake’s stillbirth in October 2005.

To ensure there was a permanent record of the week, NMSF produced the book.

The winning drawings are featured in the book alongside contributions from the local community, including NMSF patrons, MP Grant Shapps, professor Cathy Warwick, chief executive, Royal College of Midwives, Sir Cyril Chantler and several well-known individuals from entertainment and sport.

The couple choose to work with the school on the book because their three children, Ruby, Mia and Theo go there.

Andrew Canter, NMSF chairman, said: “We were absolutely delighted with the amazing support of everyone in the community and at Oaklands School.

“The children’s drawings were brilliant and we had a very difficult time choosing the winners.

“We have received some wonderful happy childhood memories for the ‘Little Book’ and are extremely excited about scaling up our activity over the next few years.”

Clare Luther said: “To be so closely involved with Jake’s Charity over the past few months has been a joy.

“Maria and I have loved creating something for The Little Book of Happy Memories and hope that all the hard work from the Canter family and the children at Oaklands School helps to raise a bigger awareness and more funds for National Maternity Support Fundation (NMSF) and maternity care - a heartfelt and personal cause.”

Oaklands headteacher Julie Petitt said: “It was an absolute privilege to support a charity so close to the hearts of one of our own Oaklands’ families.

“The work of Andrew and Rachel Canter, to promote better outcomes for maternity care in the future, is inspirational and they are great role models for the children at Oaklands.

“The children thoroughly enjoyed raising money during ‘Caring Week’ and we look forward to reading the Little Book of Happy Memories and to continuing to support the charity.”
