A COMPETITION to find Welwyn Hatfield’s top independent businesses has seen winners treated to a trip to the Houses of Parliament.

Business owners were greeted by MP Grant Shapps as he gave them a grand tour, which even included the chapel where Baroness Thatcher’s coffin laid.

Mr Shapps said: “Welwyn Hatfield has some fantastic local independent shops – there are more than 500.

“They provide a service that a lot of chains would find hard to match.

“They really go out of their way for their customers.”

This is the first time the competition has run but the Tory Party chairman said he wants it to be an annual event.

The overall winners of the competition were Natural Health, in Wigmore’s Way, WGC, after being voted number one by customers.

Julie Goodwin, owner of the shop, said: “There were some really strong contenders, we are really honoured to have won.

“We were so happy and I know everybody in the shop is really excited about it.”

The shop provides a number of goods for those looking to lead a healthy and fit lifestyle – which include nuts, seeds and gluten-free products.

“We want to thank everybody for their support and our customers for voting for us.

“It is also shows that independent shops are appreciated,” she added.

Mark Burley, owner of Bob’s Family Butchers, took second prize.

He said: “We were delighted, we have only owned the shop for 18 months.

“It was quite pleasing as in the top four, three were from Hatfield. Things are going in the right direction.”

The butchers, in High View, Hatfield, entered the competition late but still managed to make their way through to the final and then on to Parliament.

“It was really interesting, Grant did a very good job,” he added.

Customers got to vote for their favourite independent shop online after the competition was launched last year.

Also in the top five were: Simms TV, in The Common, Hatfield; JR Hammersley Fishmongers, in Bradmore Green, Brookmans Park, Hatfield; and Essence Nail and Beauty, Salisbury Square, Old Hatfield.
