Protruding nails and bolts leave motorists vulnerable to punctures

ROAD humps introduced in a bid to slow down speeding motorists have been condemned as dangerous.

Traffic calming measures in Knightsfield, WGC, have fallen into a state of disrepair.

Nails and bolts are left loose and protruding, leaving unsuspecting motorists vulnerable to punctures or damage to their vehicles.

Now exasperated, residents are calling on the county council to replace or even get rid of the speed bumps - less than a year after they were first installed.

Stuart Clewlow, of Uplands, said: "If someone is not aware of the imminent danger then it would be easy to clip a tyre, leading to a puncture or even, dread to think, if cyclists caught one of them.

"I have written to Herts County Council, however they have not responded."

One of Mr Clewlow's neighbours has already come a cropper on one of the lethal bumps.

She said: "I had to call out the RAC on Tuesday due to a puncture caused by one of the bolts sticking out of the humps."

A disgruntled resident of Monkswood said: "I want them removed, they are damaging all the cars.

"Lorries and buses are fine - they still speed over them. I wouldn't even mind if they put cameras up instead, it would be better than those bumps."

A council spokesman said: "The road humps are held in by stainless steel bolts, which have rubber covers.

"Some covers have come loose and our works team will be replacing them, hopefully this week.

"We'll take the opportunity while carrying out this work to inspect the other humps.
