Welwyn Garden City shops evacuated after potential gas leak

SHOPPERS were evacuated in Welwyn Garden City today (Tuesday) after gas was smelt.

Fire crews were called at around 10.30am after a strong smell of gas near Prezzo restaurant on Howardsgate.

The area was cordoned off and people were evacuated from nearby shops.

No leak has been found, but the Italian eatery remained closed while checks were carried out by National Grid over night.

Update: The restaurant was reopened Wednesday morning.
