Welwyn Garden City parents question choice of special guest for Christmas lights switch-on

Parents have questioned the choice of an ex-Love Island contestant to turn on Welwyn Garden City’s Christmas lights with many making alternative suggestions, including Peppa Pig or Batman.
Former ITV2 Love Island contestant Kady McDermott is set to flick the switch on Thursday next week, but many Welwyn Hatfield residents have questioned the organisers’ choice of special guest.
Critics posted a barrage of comments and alternative suggestions on Facebook after Welwyn Garden City Business Improvement District (BID) announced that Kady would be doing the honours in Howardsgate.
Mum-of-two Becky Lough, 34, of WGC, told the Welwyn Hatfield Times: “I thought the lights being switched on were supposed to be aimed towards the children to get them excited about Christmas?
“I think little ones would rather see someone dressed up in a fancy dress costume or as Batman or Wonder Woman.
“I’m sure Wonder Woman would still keep the blokes happy.”
Pip Moore, of WGC, said: “I think it should be Georgia who was featured on CountryFile the other week.
“A local lass who is incredibly courageous and determined.”
Je-Mai Chisholm, of WGC, said: “So the event is aimed at hormonal teen boys?
“Thought it was for families and children?”
On Thursday, November 16, in the Howard Centre and along Howardsgate a number of festive activities will be taking place from 4pm.
At 6.30pm Kady will be turning on the Christmas lights to kick off the countdown to the big day.
BID had also asked Lisa Snowdon to turn on the lights but the TV presenter had another commitment this year.
Taking to social media, Stevenage’s Kady tweeted to her 332,000 Twitter followers: “So excited to be turning on the Christmas lights on 16th November in Welwyn Garden City in Hertfordshire.”
The 22-year-old was in the second series of Love Island in 2016 and came third place with Scott Thomas, who she has since separated from.
Kady, who claims she can do three shots in a row without being sick, now has 987,000 followers on Instagram and owns her own make-up line.
Although it isn’t organising the event, the borough council has funded some of the event costs.
A Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council spokeswoman said: “We have made a contribution to core running costs of the event, including security, the fun fair, Santa and some marketing materials.
“The exact amount of the contribution won’t be finalised until after the event.
“All other entertainment will be funded through the BID.”
