A Welwyn Garden City man who befriended his elderly next door neighbour, doing odd jobs for him, ended up stealing nearly £150,000 from his bank account.

Wayne Henderson, 48, systematically plundered the account of reclusive pensioner Stephen Hampton after gaining his trust and being given his bank cards.

This week Henderson pleaded guilty to the theft of £148,180 belonging to his neighbour when he appeared at St Albans Crown Court.

The two men had been neighbours, living next door to one another in Howlands, Welwyn Garden City for many years.

Recorder Leslie Cuthbert adjourned the sentencing for the preparation of reports.

He granted Henderson bail, but warned him that he should expect to receive a spell behind bars when he next appears in court in April.
