Surprised shoppers after alarm went off

Shoppers were evacuated from the Howard Centre after alarms were activated.

Shortly after 4.30pm alarms went off in the Welwyn Garden City shopping centre.

Surprised shoppers quickly evacuated, but were left in the dark to why the alarm was going off.

Paul Haynes, manager of the centre, told the Welwyn Hatfield Times: “It was a false alarm caused by one of the tenants, one of the members of staff at one of the stores. It was an accident.

“We take safety very seriously in the current climate. We apologise for the inconvenience.”

Shoppers have now been allowed to return back inside the shopping centre.
