A homeless Welwyn Garden City woman who asked for donations for a dog charity instead of birthday presents is desperately trying to reach £1,000.

On December 27, last year Karen Thorpe turned 50 years old and asked for people to donate to Dogs Trust instead of giving her any presents.

Since then only £35 has been raised.

The YMCA resident told the Welwyn Hatfield Times that it would be a “dream come true” if she could get to her target of £1,000.

Karen, who has been sponsoring a dog herself for over a year, said: “Dogs Trust do such amazing work and I just love animals so much.

“I just can’t believe people could be so cruel to such innocent animals and just abandon them.

“Being homeless myself I know how tough it is so I want to help dogs who are out there all alone.”

Karen added: “It’s disappointing that I haven’t raised my target yet but I’m still happy that it will help a little.

“I would like to thank Grant Shapps for sharing my appeal as otherwise I don’t think I would have raised anything.”
