A FAMILY had a lucky escape as fire ravaged the kitchen in their home last night (Thursday).

A smoke alarm warned them of the danger and they were able to close the kitchen door to isolate the fire and flee the burning building, in Harwood Hill, Welwyn Garden City.

Firefighters were called at 11.41pm and battled the blaze for just under an hour.

Firefighter David Undery told the Welwyn Hatfield Times: “It is important and significant that if they hadn’t had a smoke alarm they wouldn’t have escaped.”
