A police spokeswoman said the thieves took two horses, a cart and bags of wooden logs from a field off Sandridge’s House Lane between 9am on July 16 and 12pm the following day.

Howlands resident Charmain Hale, 42, said one of the animals has since been found in Watford, but the other is still missing.

“We are absolutely distraught,” she told the Welwyn Hatfield Times. “My little girl doesn’t sleep at night, she is crying all the time.

“He [the ponie] will be looking for us, he’s used to his comforts. We are just absolutely distraught, it’s a nightmare.”

The police spokeswoman confirmed that enquiries are on-going but no-one had been arrested, and encouraged anyone with information to contact officers via non-emergency number 101.
