A MAN was punched and told he would be stabbed, and his girlfriend was threatened, in an unprovoked late-night assault in WGC.

The couple, who had just got out of a taxi near Dalewood, were shouted at by a male duo, who then struck, with one hitting the man in the face.

The 23-year-old victim, who did not wish to be named, told the Welwyn Hatfield Times it was a “horrifying” attack.

He said: “We had just got back from a night out in Stevenage, it was completely random.

“The two guys walked past us and then shouted something, the next thing, one of them has hitting me in the face and was threatening to stab me.”

The couple managed to get away, but say the attackers, believed to be in their 20s, followed. As they approached a friend’s house for safety, the boyfriend was forced to hide underneath a van.

His girlfriend said: “They were still with me by the door and one threatened me.

“It was initially very scary, but they weren’t touching me, so I knew they were just trying to get his attention. It was horrible.”

The couple have been left very distressed and will not walk anywhere after their ordeal, which happened at about 2.30am on Saturday.

Police are appealing for information about the attack.

A Hertfordshire Constabulary spokeswoman said one attacker was of a large build, between 5ft 9in and 6ft, and wearing a light-coloured T-shirt.

The other was a skinnier man who was roughly 5ft 9in, and was in dark clothing.

She added the “nasty incident” was totally unacceptable and officers were doing all they could to track down the attackers.

Call the non-emergency number on 101.
