A Welwyn Garden City county councillor has allocated £750 of her Locality Budget to help set up telephone support service for isolated people.

Haldens representative Barbara Gibson gave the money to the Welwyn Hatfield Community and Voluntary Service, contributing towards the start-up costs of its Let’s Chat initiative.

Cllr Gibson said: “As our population ages, the potential for isolation increases.

“It breaks my heart to think of people who may go days or weeks without any human interaction.

“This new programme will harness the great strength of the CVS in utilising volunteers to help alleviate isolation and loneliness, providing a friendly voice and a connection to the community.

“It’s a worthwhile project and I’m happy to play a part in getting it off the ground.”

The Locality Budget scheme involves councillors identifying local issues and each spending £10k on projects in their areas.

A council spokesman encouraged residents and businesses to get in touch with members with their requests.
