Welwyn Garden City’s newly revamped Coronation Fountain has been unveiled.

The much-loved landmark, in the heart of Welwyn Garden City town centre, underwent a £22,000 revamp in December, ahead of the town’s 2020 centenary celebrations.

Designed by architects Louis de Soissons, the fountain holds around 20,000 litres of water and was constructed in 1953 to mark the coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

The work included the cleaning and polishing of the symbolic bronze crown, cleaning of the pool inside and edging, and the replacement of a number of fittings and filters to improve water flow.

The lighting was also upgraded, with new colour options.

Councillor Duncan Bell, executive member for resources, said: “Unfortunately calcium deposit build-up was preventing the fountain from working as well as it should have.

“We’re pleased that the fountain has been revamped so it is working and looking its best for residents and shoppers to enjoy ahead of the 2020 celebrations.”
