The winner of the Welwyn Garden City Christmas lights switch-on competition is set to be picked shortly.

Welwyn Garden City Business Improvement District is due to pick a winner at 5pm today.

It will follow reality star Kady McDermott’s appearance on Good Morning Britain (GMB) this morning, when she talked about the petition calling for her not to switch on the town’s lights.

More than 1,300 signed the petition calling for a “local hero” to turn on the lights instead after deeming Kady unsuitable.

Kady featured on the reality show Love Island and also had sex while on the show.

Following public reaction, organisers - WGC BID - decided to hold a competition to find someone else to switch on the lights.

This morning, Kady chatted with ITV breakfast show hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid about her Christmas lights snub.

Piers said: “I thought Love Island was totally cretinous.

“I’m not your biggest fan, however, I think this is ridiculous.

“I think you have a profile, you have got good charities and you’re from the area so why shouldn’t you turn on the lights?

“I find myself in an odd position defending a Love Island contestant.”
