A Welwyn Garden City bus driver has shaved all his hair off in honour of a 'terrific woman' who acted as a mum to him.
Allen Howell, 49, of Homestead Court, had his head shaved on Saturday, September 30, for free at Bladez, in Woodhall.
Allen, who grew up in care, met his best friend Kevin when he was a youngster going through a rough patch.
The pair formed a brotherly bond and Kevin’s mum, Anne Hawes, cared for Allen as her own.
Anne sadly died of cancer six years ago so this year Allen decided to be part of MacMillan’s campaign called Brave the Shave in her memory and to support others suffering from the disease.
Allen, who has a 19-year-old son, said: “Anne was very much like a mum to me. She was a terrific woman.
“She was hard-working and worked her way up from nothing to become a teacher who helped those with learning difficulties.
“Anne was always there for me and always gave brilliant advice.”
The Uno bus driver joked: “Kevin is bald so he can’t shave his hair off because he’s got none, but for a nearly 50 year old I have a whole head full.
“It will grow back quick but I wanted to do this to raise some money to help beat this nasty disease.
“Sadly it will affect everyone at some point in their lives.”
Allen’s biological mum also lost her life to cancer.
