Councillors voted against recommendations of their own officers to approve a bulk-buy wine store in Welwyn Garden City.
Elected members waved through Majestic Wine’s plans to change the use of 21 Broadwater Road from employment to retail use at a meeting of Welwyn Hatfield Council’s Development Management Committee yesterday (Thursday).
In doing so they defied council officers, who in a report, claimed the scheme would “result in the unacceptable loss of an employment-generating site”.
A council spokeswoman said: “It was approved, subject to certain conditions.”
