A Welwyn councillor who is recovering from cancer recently celebrated his 40th wedding anniversary with his 'loving' wife.
Welwyn East councillor Steven Markiewicz and his wife Ann were obliged to ‘celebrate’ 40 years of marriage at Watford General Hospital on Sunday, June 25.
The councillor is in hospital following an operation to remove cancer of the oesophagus on 12 June.
Councillor Markiewicz said: “It was always going to be a close run thing as recovery usually takes 10 to 14 days.
“My wife is a loving, kind hearted lady and I am glad to share my life with her.
“We first met in 1971 and married in Birmingham where we both hail from.
“I have seen her grow from a young bride to a loving mother and caring grandmother.”
Ann said: “I wish to take this opportunity to thank the medical staff who have worked tirelessly to achieve a full recovery.
“The intensive care team were magnificent and showed such professionalism and dedication.
“The consultants and doctors have been world class. We will have a family get together on Steven’s return. I look forward to many more years with my husband.”
Councillor Markiewicz added: “There are three other councillors recovering from hospital stays, Lynn Chesterman, John Dean and popular returning mayor Lynn Sparks and I take this opportunity to wish them a speedy recovery.”
