SCHOOLCHILDREN had to be evacuated from classes after a fire broke out in Welwyn on Monday.

Firefighters were sent to douse the five metre (16ft) hedgerow blaze at the Welwyn Sport and Social Club, in Ottway Walk at 11.27am.

Thick smoke billowing towards St Mary’s School forced teachers to move pupils outside.

A Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue spokesman said: “Smoke was going across to the nearby school so children were moved to the playground area.”

One fire engine attended the scene from Hatfield and the blaze was extinguished at 11.49am.
