Hundreds of Welwyn Hatfield homes were left without water after bungling workers accidently accessed public water main valves.

Nearly 50 streets in Welham Green were without water this afternoon.

Affinity Water received numerous calls from residents, who were then told not to use appliances such as washing machines while the problem was investigated.

Among the many roads affected were Dixons Hill Road, Great North Road, Parsonage Road and Foxes Lane.

An Affinity Water spokesperson told the Welwyn Hatfield Times at about 3pm: “We received reports of a supply interruption in the Welham Green area on Wednesday, November 21.

“An Affinity Water technician attended the area to investigate and found that a third party intending to work on a private main had accidently accessed valves on our network, which caused the loss of supply.

“We have resolved the issue and supplies have been restored.

“We have also advised the third party on the correct valves to use to avoid any further disruptions.

“We would like to thank customers for their patience during this time.”
